Capacity Building on Climate Change and ESG Reporting in an Australian MNC

To create awareness on climate change among employees in a multinational company with footprint in 8 countries, a comprehensive capacity-building program titled "Preparing for the Climate-friendly Future" was designed, developed and implemented.

This initiative, structured as an info-quiz and recognition model, aimed to educate employees on the critical aspects of climate change and its implications. The program was divided into two sections. The first section, "Climate Change and Its Impact on Humanity", focused on raising general awareness about climate change, emphasizing its effects on human life and the environment. The second section focussed on creating awareness on individuals’ "Carbon Footprint". This was to personalize the learning experience by enabling employees to calculate their carbon footprint, thereby fostering a deeper understanding of their individual impact on the environment.

To enhance outreach, the software system – LMS (Learning Management System) – was created. It was operational for 4 months across 8 countries. Employees were motivated and reminded to utilize this opportunity to learn about climate change. The program successfully engaged approximately 13,000 employees from 8 countries.

This widespread participation underscores the program’s effectiveness in reaching a large audience and instilling important environmental knowledge. Participants earned badges as ‘Climate Friend’, ‘Climate Champ’, or ‘Climate Leader’ depending on their scores.

This capacity-building project yielded several positive outcomes. Employees became more informed about climate change, leading to increased engagement in sustainability initiatives. This helped the company to prepare their employees for ESG reporting. Proactive climate education helped the business stay ahead of regulatory requirements.
